Why Modern Commercial Heavy Diesels Use Torque-Turn (TTY) Fasteners

1. Elimination of Thread Friction Variance: Traditional torque wrenches measure torsional resistance, where up to 90% of applied torque is lost overcoming thread and underhead friction. By torquing to a base preload and then rotating a specific number of degrees (e.g. 90° or 180°), the bolt is stretched linearly by the exact thread pitch.

2. Yield Zone Clamping Uniformity: Tightening into the elastic yield zone ensures identical clamping force across all cylinders, preventing head gasket fire ring failure, combustion gas leakage into cooling passages, and cylinder liner cavitation.

3. Single-Use Rule: Always check OEM service manual guidelines regarding bolt reuse. Most torque-to-yield cylinder head bolts permanently deform during the angle stage and MUST be replaced with new fasteners during an in-frame overhaul.
