SAE J1939 CAN-Bus Physical Layer Standards
The SAE J1939 network connects the Engine ECM, Transmission Controller (TCU), ABS Brake Module, and Instrument Cluster over a shielded or unshielded twisted pair:
CAN-High (Yellow Wire)
Dominant Voltage: 3.5V DC
Recessive Voltage: 2.5V DC
CAN-Low (Green Wire)
Dominant Voltage: 1.5V DC
Recessive Voltage: 2.5V DC
Terminating Resistors
Two 120Ω resistors in parallel.
Total Bus Resistance: 60Ω ± 6Ω
3-Step CAN-Bus Diagnostic Resistance Test
- Turn Key OFF and disconnect truck battery negative terminals.
- Connect multimeter across 9-Pin Diagnostic Port Pin C (CAN Hi) and Pin D (CAN Lo).
- Reading should be exactly 60 Ohms. If 120 Ohms, one terminating resistor is open. If 0 Ohms, wires are shorted together.
