SPN 3251 FMI 2 High (Derate in 50 miles)

System Overview: Aftertreatment / Exhaust (DPF)

The Engine Control Module (ECM) detected an erratic or implausible reading from the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) differential pressure sensor delta-P lines.

Driver / Dashboard Symptoms
  • Check Engine Light & DPF Amber Lamp illuminated
  • Parked active regeneration fails to initiate or aborts prematurely
  • Loss of engine power (Stage 1 derate: 25% torque reduction)
Root Probable Causes
  • Cracked, pinched, or soot-clogged metal delta-P sensor sampling tubes
  • Failed DPF differential pressure sensor (water intrusion in wiring harness pin 2/3)
  • Severely face-plugged DPF substrate requiring thermal bake cleaning
Step-by-Step Field Diagnostic Procedure
  1. Inspect the two 1/4-inch steel sensing lines from DPF canister to the sensor for carbon blockage using compressed air (max 30 PSI)
  2. Key ON Engine OFF: Read live Delta-P voltage with diagnostic tool (should read 0.45V to 0.55V at 0 kPa pressure)
  3. Perform a manual DPF pressure drop test at 1,800 RPM governed high idle (normal clean DPF is < 1.5 psi / 10 kPa)
Sensor Wiring Pinout: ECM 120-Pin Connector Pin 44 (5V Ref), Pin 62 (Signal), Pin 81 (Sensor Return Ground)
